New Stage Production “Save My Black Soul” Celebrates Black Creative Legacy

Laurel Mill Playhouse invites you to experience Save My Black Soul, a moving new play written by local playwright Evan Carrington, opening January 16, 2026.

Set during the Golden Age of Hollywood, Save My Black Soul follows Edward Foster, a talented but frustrated Black actor who’s tired of being offered roles that box him in. In search of greater purpose, Edward makes the bold decision to leave the spotlight behind and train the next generation of artists in New York City. But the pull of fame, fortune, and unfinished dreams won't let go so easily. What follows is a gripping journey through ambition, legacy, and the emotional cost of choosing purpose over popularity.

This original work is more than just a period piece—it’s a tribute. Carrington’s script pays homage to the groundbreaking icons who carved a path for Black creatives in American entertainment: Sidney Poitier, Lena Horne, Paul Robeson, Ruby Dee, and others whose legacies still shape the stage and screen today.

With a cast of rising talent and a story rooted in cultural pride and artistic truth, Save My Black Soul is a must-see for anyone who values Black storytelling, history, and the power of theater to reflect our shared humanity.
